Map Indexes Available from the U.S. Geological Survey

Fact Sheet 134-01 (December 2001)

Each year the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) produces thousands of new and revised topographic and geologic maps, as well as other types of cartographic products. To provide easy access to these maps, the USGS publishes indexes that are updated periodically.

State Indexes

State Index to Topographic and Other Map Coverage - A State index is designed to inform map users of the various series of topographic maps produced and distributed by the USGS and to assist users in selecting and purchasing maps. Printed on a State base map, each State index identifies quadrangle areas and other format maps by reference code, map name, and scale. These indexes are being updated through digital cartographic technology.

State Map List —The companion publication to a State index is the State Map List. This publication lists alphabetically, by map type and scale, the stock numbers, names, and version dates of the available maps.
